In the neighborhood of Ulamış, Suna Kalaycı bakes traditional sourdough bread from flour ground from heirloom “Karakılçık” wheat. She also takes olive oil, ash from wood fires, and rainwater and transforms these basic elements of village life into pure and natural soap. In the meantime, Sevcan Adakuşu, a fisherwoman from Sığacık, sells her fish at the local market. H. Hande Yelke’s film Ateş ve Su (Fire and Water) introduces us to Suna Hanım, Sevcan Hanım and the other strong women of Izmir's Seferhisar District who are repositories of cultural knowledge accumulated over centuries.
