Yilan, a Taste of Home
2019, Taiwan, 18’31, Dir. Hsing-Ying Tseng, Chinese, English / Turkish subtitles
If Yılan were a person, what would his or her personality be? That question was the jumping-off point for this award-winning short documentary from Hsing-Ying Tseng. The film traces the interactions between a group of Basque chefs visiting Taiwan on a cultural exchange and a group of young entrepreneurs from Yılan who have taken it upon themselves to preserve their local culinary culture. One day the visiting chefs are discussing the connection between Basque culinary culture and place identity; the next, they are off to the hillsides with a local guide to take part in the tea harvest. As the Turkish saying goes, “Drinking coffee together means a 40-year friendship,” and Yılan: A Taste of Home highlights how food can be both unique to a specific culture and at the same time a way of bringing people of different cultures together.
