A historically multicultural city whose residents represent many races and religions, Izmir has also suffered from its share of disasters. Of these, the fire of 1922 has been one of the most damaging, both financially and spiritually. When the fire destroyed the Surp Krikor Lusavoric Armenian hospital in Basmane, it left behind an empty hole that remains in the heart of today’s city. Smyrna’s Hole / Çukurhattan follows the history of the “Basmane Pit”, also known as the “Pit of Shame”. Not only does the film trace the history of the pit, it also raises questions about its future.
