2022, Turkey, 30', Dir. Selim Uyar, Turkish (English subtitles)
When it floods in Ordu, the hazelnuts are blown from the trees and rush towards the sea like a school of anchovies. This is only one of the trials and tribulations facing hazelnut growers on Turkey’s Black Sea coast, which accounts for around three-quarters of the world’s hazelnut production. The themes of climate change and deforestation are the undercurrents running through this film from director Selim Uyar, which follows one particular family through the seasonal changes involved in the cultivation of hazlenuts. That family happens to be the director’s own.
