Levantine

The Eastern Mediterranean was once referred to by Europeans as “The Levant”. This historical term is the basis for the word “Levantine”, the term that is still applied today to the descendants of Europeans who settled in the coastal cities of the Ottoman empire.  This short film produced at the Gümüşhane Film Workshop introduces us to the Levantine community in Izmir. Through interviews with five individuals of different ages, genders and professions who identify themselves as Levantine, we learn about the history and contributions of one of Turkey’s minority communities and also about how different individuals relate to the concept of belonging to a people and a place.
