Sky Like Silk, Full of Oranges

In the spring of 1990, between the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification, the first citizens of the former GDR fly to Mallorca, thrilled at the chance of a ‘holiday in the sun’. Long queues form in front of the travel agencies, even though a week in Mallorca costs around two months' salary per person. Known from the colourful postcards of their West German relatives, this Spanish holiday destination is a place of longing for many East Germans. The travelers are greeted at the airport in Palma de Mallorca like guests of state, as the Spanish tourism industry is hoping for a new upswing. Betina Kuntzsch’s short film Sky Like Silk, Full of Oranges reconstructs a travelogue from research, contemporary press articles and interviews with eye-witnesses. A collage of animated postcards, documents and vacation photos, this short documentary reminisces about a time full of comic, tragic and embarrassing encounters, pondering on the freedom to travel, the hunger for color, and the desire to belong.
