Directed by Hakan Barçın

A Legend of Foça: Nihat Dirim is a 60-minute documentary that chronicles the life and legacy of Nihat Dirim, whose profound passion, love, and dedication contributed to the town's development. Dirim’s visionary leadership as mayor of Foça between 1989-1999 is exemplified by initiatives such as building bridges of friendship with Greece's Lesbos Island and Palea Fokea, leading environmental campaigns against a proposed thermal power plant in Aliağa, and launching projects to protect the endangered Mediterranean monk seals. His commitment to environmental protection, cultural heritage preservation, and a people-centered approach to governance were central to his administration. When Dirim passed away in 2022, Hakan Barçın, who had developed a close friendship while collaborating with the legendary mayor on various projects, felt a significant void and saw the documentary as a means of commemorating Dirim’s legacy. Barçın describes the project not merely as a biography but as an oral history initiative that sheds light on Foça's recent past. Production spanned approximately 15 months and included extensive archival research as well as nearly 40 interviews that provide deep insights into Dirim's genuine relationships with the public, his leadership style, and his unwavering devotion to Foça.

Hakan Barçın was born in İzmir and graduated from İzmir Atatürk High School and the Department of American Language and Literature at Hacettepe University. A politician and environmental activist, Barçın served as a council member of both the Foça Municipality and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality between 2019-2024. A first-time filmmaker, Barçın produced and directed the documentary A Foça Legend: Nihat Dirim to honor the memory of Nihat Dirim and to convey to future generations the environmentally friendly and participatory approach to municipal governance that the two men share.
