The German colony of Togoland was a small belt of land between the British Gold Coast Colony and French Dahomey that encompassed parts of today’s Togo and Ghana. Jürgen Ellinghaus captures the contradictions of post-colonial culture in which German military marches and African sacrificial rites coexist in real-time as well as memory. Ellinghaus’s visually stunning and thought-provoking film straddles the line between classic documentary and experimental essay.
