Missing Fetine

Imagine you are a girl living a simple life in a village somewhere and one day you are told you must marry someone you don’t know and move with them to a foreign country where you don’t know the language, the culture, or the way of life. This was the fate of a large number of young Muslim women in Cyprus during the British Colonial Period at a time when many families were living in poverty in the 1920s and ’30s.

This unusual documentary directed by Yeliz Shukri follows Pembe Menteş, a Cypriot-Australian, who sets out on a journey in search of her great aunt Fetine Memiş, who was sent to Palestine after a forced marriage and never heard from again. Not only has this award-winning film been screened in Greece and Turkey as well as in Cyprus, the film team maintains a Facebook page that families can use to try and locate missing loved ones.
