The Whaleman is a short documentary film about a small community in Saudi Arabia that has been living exactly the same life for hundreds of years. “Whaleman” is a deep-rooted profession in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia. The film explores in depth the meaning of this term, which exists only among this small community by the Red Sea. “I see no difference between documentary and narrative genres; both have to be approached in the same way,” says director Hassan Hejaili, whose interest in early cinema is apparent in this beautifully shot black and white film.
