Ali Paslıoğlu has been running his blacksmith shop in the Eski Sanayi industrial area in Kayseri for 51 year. Mustafa, his son, began as an apprentice, and has been working alongside his father for 21 years. The master-apprentice relationship has always sustained their profession – but today there are no more blacksmith apprentices, and the future of the profession is unclear. Mustafa’s young son Ali is not quite sure what he wants to do with his life, but his grandfather is sure that he wants his namesake to get a formal education and not become a blacksmith’s apprentice. My Grandfather’s Job shows the different perspectives of the three generations towards a traditional profession and how it has changed over time.
