The woman at the centre of Speechless Memory is Kyriaki, a member of the minority Slavophone community in northern Greece. In fact, Kyriaki isn’t speechless – she speaks two languages. What’s more, her memories go beyond her own personal experience to include the memories of a previous generation. These come to life in Kyriaki’s retelling of them, accompanied by images from family photo albums that offer us a glimpse into the history of her land. Kyriaki’s community is one of many that, at one time or another, and in one place or another, have been compelled to conformity by a dominant culture. A profound sense of loss permeates this documentary, which describes Kyriaki’s poignant search for a linguistic and cultural identity.
