Anthropologist Laura Marchetti is the scientific coordinator of the Project “The Streets of the Fairy Tale”, which outlines the essential characteristics of the traditional fairy tale peculiar to Gargano, a mountainous region by the Adriatic Sea in eastern Italy. In Adriano Losacco’s short documentary film, Marchetti reflects on the peculiarities of the typically Mediterranean “trickster” hero, as exemplified in “The Parable of the Chickpea”. Losacco pairs Marchetti’s narrative with images from the Luce-Cinecitta Historical Archive, which has been inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Registry. In this way, the film audience is able to journey together with the hero of the local folk tale, a clever pilgrim who visits the important churches of the Gargano and meets a surprising end.
