Mehmet İsmail Çeçen was born in 1991 in the Bağlar District of Diyarbakır. Çeçen graduated from Ege University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Public Relations and Publicity in 2014. That same year, he received a screenwriting support award from the TÜRSAK Foundation for his film “Acımız Büyük” (How Great is Our Sorrow). In 2017, Çeçen received a Project Support Award at the TRT 9th International Documentary Film Festival for his film “Mezarlık Çalgıcıları” (Cemetery Instruments). To date, Çeçen has shot 15 fiction films and 8 documentaries.

His movie "Mourning" was selected for screening at Foça Film Days 2021.
