Originally from Çanakkale, Ülkü Sönmez graduated from ÇOMÜ with a degree in graphic design before studying cinema and television at Okan University. Sönmez is currently a Research Assistant at İstanbul Yeni Yüzyıl University. Both A Section from Troy and his previous film, Sığda (Shallow), focus on male characters in rural Turkey. Both films have been screened at different festivals in Turkey.
