Unkapanı: The Endless Tale

As Yeşilçam was to Turkish cinema, Unkapanı was to Turkish pop music: the beating heart of the industry. Located in the İMÇ, a modernist concrete complex originally designed to house Istanbul’s textile merchants, Unkapanı’s record producers attracted aspiring musical talent from all over Turkey. It was the destination for anyone with a voice, a saz, bus fare, and a dream. But times change – and so do musical tastes and technology. Award-winning director Tayfun Belet’s Unkapanı: The Endless Tale is a tragicomic story of people whose hopes of fame are connected to this place, where despite the “heartless” transformation of the music sector, would-be stars and their promoters refuse to let this musical fairy tale come to an end.
